Scala on Mobile

Scala is soon becoming the preferred language of choice for Android development. For mobile applications, Scala enjoys advantages over other JVM languages, such as JRuby or Groovy, because statically typed languages run faster, consume less memory, and generally are better optimized.

Knoldus has delivered mobile products which interface with the Scala back-end services using PhoneGap. PhoneGap is an open source development framework for building mobile applications across multiple devices.

There are different kinds of mobile in the market that use different platforms or operating system (OS) such as iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows etc. Developers prefers to develop the applications in one common language that would be supported by all the popular platform. This is called as the cross platform mobile development.

PhoneGap is one of the most widely used cross-platform technology for creating apps that operate for multiple devices, such as the iPhone, Android etc. PhoneGap is the ONLY open source mobile framework that supports all the major seven platforms. It uses web development technologies such as JavaScript, CSS and HTML5. It also allows for access to hardware features including GPS/location data, accelerometer, camera, sound and more.

Following are the benefits of PhoneGap development :

Take advantage of HTML5 and CSS3.
Use Java script to write the code.
Access Native features Deploy the apps to multiple platforms.
   Fast development.
   Cost effective.

We can work with you to identify your mobile and tablet strategy. Based on the need we would propose either a PhoneGap based solution or running Scala on Android. In a couple of our products the UI was designed to give a similar look and feel on a browser as a native application which avoided the mobile development all together. In a nutshell, we would help you make the best decision.
